The author, Prop Geldenhuys, was a pilot in the Rhodesian Air Force for the duration of the Rhodesian War and was privileged to serve as a Flight Commander on both the Hunter and Canberra aircraft Squadrons. He retired after more than twenty-years service, in the rank of Wing Commander - equivalent to the Army rank of Lietuenant-Colonel.

Aircraft flown include:
• Canberra – English Electric Canberra B2 and T4 aircraft.
• Hunter – Hawker Hunter FGA 9 aircraft
• Lynx – Cessna twin-engined ‘push-pull’ aircraft
• Provost – Hunting Percival Provost TMk1 and TMk 52 aircraft
• Trojan – Aeromacchi light transport / Reconnaisance aircraft
• Vampire – de Haviland Vampire T11 and T52 aircraft
